ASCENDENTES RESPICERE IUVAT MOUNTAINEERS LIKE TO LOOK BACK
The Steve Ogden Memorial Meet LAKES 29th – 30th January 2021 Sarah and Andrew J again have brought things together! The venue for the meet will be the Glanamara Hotel & Adventure Centre, Borrowdale again, where we will be absorbed into the luxury that they provide! Remember it is self-booking direct to the centre, firstname.lastname@example.org, 017687 77222, much more info on the web. The food is excellent, as we found in 2020! Bring on the good weather, and the end of the virus close down.
Certificated First Aid Course. Sorry not under consideration this year. Let Harvey know if you are interested in this in 2022.
Spring Meet 2021 Again not on the agenda – but that does not mean leaving it out in 2022; now is the time to look ahead, to look forward when the sun will be shining. Do we have anyone who feels this way?
Scotland in the Spring 2021 Sat 08 May – 15 May Now this is a goer if regulations allow. Traigh House, Arisaig, on the west coast, three miles from Arisaig, – it sounds fantastic! It comes with a grand piano and Billiard room. Many thanks to Chris S and Beckie for the initial organisation, Len has now taken over as meet organiser. Centre Details on the web and bring your mask! http://www.georgegoldsmith.com/properties/traigh-house The location offers plenty of opportunities for high and low walking. I now believe it is fully booked with a waiting list. But that does not mean you cannot join in the fantastic days on the hills – there are B&B’s and hotels around, contact Len for more details!
The 50th Welsh 1000 metres Race Weekend June 4th – 7th, 2021
The race is on Saturday 5th June. It’s the 50th Race this year so it is guaranteed a huge sporting event with a great social gathering thrown in free! It is the last event that the Gorphwysfa will organise. Bring your friends along! Again, the mighty organisational wheels are turning, note our website (www.welsh1000m.org) all details available, thanks to Judith, Kate, Sarah and Jean, the online entries system worked perfectly last year. Note we have joint organisers this year, Judith and Harvey. Its only six months but even now I need you to get in touch if you can help; this year we will again at some considerable expense book accommodation in the Plas y Brenin (see it on the web). Those who wish to stay at the Tyn y Coed or other B & Bs should book now. Put this date in your Diary it is an important/vital/not to be missed. Please let Harvey know if you want accommodation at HyG; we will overflow as an annex to H y G into Pen y Pass, or Plas y Brenin if needed.
Sunday June 6th 2021 A Grand Lunch for the race team and invited guests in Betws y Coed, watch this space.
ROCK CLIMBING & ADVENTURE MEET, PROVISIONAL DATE JUNE 18/19/21 THIS COULD HAPPEN! THE MEET COULD BE BASED AT HAFOD Y GWYNT AND WOULD BE FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN ROCK CLIMBING - BEGINNERS OR TIGERS. A DECISION WILL BE MADE AROUND ABOUT EASTER SO AGAIN WATCH YOUR EMAILS! WE WOULD NEED AN ORGANISER AGAIN – CLUB MEMBERS MUST GET INVOLVED IF THE CLUB IS TO FLOURISH. Oxfordshire Meet, around about Saturday 3rd July 2021 provisional date again all that applies above applies to this event too. Legislation must be in place to allow such a gathering. Hosts and venue are needed but it does not need to follow the previous pattern if legislation does not allow. – Any volunteers? There presumably will be room for a walk with a picnic lunch on the Saturday with a meal/buffet on Saturday evening. Rock Climbing on Brooks climbing wall on Sunday? Please get in touch if you can fill the gap, more details shortly.
Summer Alpine Meet July 8th to 18th Any chance of this happening? It would be great if we could fit in the 2020 trip into 2021 – but perhaps it will have to be 2022? Certainly, the Dolomites will be there whichever year we choose! In the meantime comments and ideas will be happily received. As with other Dolomites Meets the plan is that people organise their own accommodation either individually or by organising themselves into groups. As an alternative what about Offa’s Dike? Contact Harvey if you have any ideas.
The AUTUMN Meet 2021 This year mid/ late September? A meet formatted of previous events would be great, however only time and the virus will decide if we can come together. It is hoped that the Shorter family will again adopt this meet and leap at the opportunity of organising another September meet. Info sheet and booking form to follow.
Dinner Meet November 5th/ 6th / 7th 2021 Here I am going to be brave and announce the date! The venue to be decided, but the date is now fixed!!! Probably the Tyn y Coed, but a quick decision is needed if we wish to return to the Community Centre, as 2019 or use the Tyn y Coed. Club members only, keep the date free! As democracy rules in the Gorphwysfa, we are going to have again the official AGM of the club at 5 45pm on the night of the dinner at Hafod y Gwynt. The meeting will close at 6pm or earlier. Items for the agenda can be submitted now; the executive committee will consider their suitability for acceptance. More info nearer the date but put it in your diary!
New Year Meet, 2021/22 Will it Happen, 29/30/31st December? The Executive committee or the club members need to review this event/ both venue and date. Let Harvey know if you are interested – for this meet to continue we do need club support.
The Steve Ogden Memorial MEET LAKES 2022 Following further discussion I am sure someone will be organising the meet in 2022 but let’s fit in a date and venue quickly. Perhaps again we could have a three-night meet. When details are announced. …get your booking in early!
Scotland in the Spring 2022 seems a long way off but remember how time flies!! The agency that produced 2021 had lots of similar venues, including a castle for over 50 persons, a good venue to celebrate the clubs 50th anniversary, if there are any of us still alive! Organiser, date, and venue required!
Nepal/the Himalayas 2022, 1st- 21st October. I would like to think this will go ahead – I certainly I am keen and will be out there then. We had a great Meet in 2019 – we probably need a younger member of the club to take over organising future meets in the greater ranges, but I am very happy to help or oversee. Trekking does open huge opportunities for climbing and getting to the top of some of the lessor mountains, that start at about 18,000 feet. Himalaya mountains are for the more fit – but there is plenty to do for the age-ed wimps of the club as well, and again two trips can be run alongside each other. I am still keen to organise trips for wimps if there is any demand!
If you are interested in getting out on the hills with the Gorphwysfa then you need to note the above dates in your diaries now and get in touch with the appropriate organiser! Remember that friends are really welcome to come along to our meets, and so become involved in the club, but the Dinner meet is closed to non-members: this includes partners, so make sure they are members! On all other meets please feel free to ask if there is room.
